It doesn’t matter how big and powerful you are, the message is the same—you must stay abreast of change, or you’ll be toast. That’s the conclusion The Los Angeles Times may have arrived at, as they’re in a real fight to remain a viable organization and a business.

James O’Shea, the company’s editor noted that the paper had fallen “woefully behind” in the shift to online journalism, indicated by the drop in revenues. He cited automotive print advertising at the paper was $102 million in 2004. This year they expect it will be $55 million.

The paper now understands that they can’t hide or ignore smart competitors such as Google and Craigslist, as they’re taking readers and advertisers from them. To beat these giants, the paper is putting a plan in place, and will soon take action with the intent of becoming a relentless, powerful story-telling machine online and in print.

Over the last 30 years one of the many changes taking place worldwide is the embracement of barter. Technology is the driver which enables trading through networks to effectively take place. When your competitors are intelligently using it they become a more formidable foe.

Don’t wait around to learn (as much as you can) about this diverse business tool. Learning all of the ‘in’s’ and “out’s” of barter is strongly suggested. If you have a question email me, it’s found under my photo.
