New York Yankee Hall-Of-Famer To Sell Baseball Collection
January 31st, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsOne of the greatest “money pitchers” who ever stepped on the mound is planning to clear out his trophy room. Hall-of-Famer Whitey Ford, who holds the major-league record for greatest winning percentage (His.690 winning percentage ranks first among pitchers with 300 career decisions) has announced he will be auctioning off some 200 items–which he says represents about 60% of his collection.
The auction will take place during the All-Star game festivities at Yankee Stadium this summer, which is the final year of “Yankee Stadium.” Next year the Yankees will be moving into their new digs.
It should be quite the emotional day overall at The Stadium. As Ford exclaimed in the book on his life, Slick, “You kind of took it for granted around the Yankees that there was always going to be baseball in October.”
Ford, 79, will be offering items signed by Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. Ford says his wife is thrilled this is happening because now she will have some room in the house.
The value of Ford’s collection may enable her to even go house-hunting!
