Barter’s First $100 Million Media Time-Bank (BarterNews #3)
February 26th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsThe legendary comedian Bob Hope was the subject of our first celebrity cover (Issue #3) when Editor Bob Meyer and photographer Howard O’Donnell attended the Sales, Trade & Purchase International Convention at the MGM Grand Hotel in Reno.
The conference was the brainstorm of a Canadian real estate developer, who, despite a stagnant economy, had the audacity to charge a $5,000 registration fee. The objective was to offer serious, mega-money investors an opportunity to negotiate directly with principals for their big ticket items…such as high-rise office buildings, commercial airline jets, casinos, and million-dollar homes.
Another very notable story focused on William B. Tanner and the formula this corporate barter pioneer used to build his barter company’s $100 million media time-bank—which he subsequently sold to Media General for $39.5 million.
Richard Robbins, who helped spearhead game-show syndication in 1946, explained how the basic formulas for the syndication business were developed through the radio shows “Stop the Music” and “Beat the Clock.”
Also of interest was the barter offer of the famed author of the Peanuts cartoon strip, Charles Schultz, trading his 6,000 square-foot residence on 12 acres one-hour north of San Francisco.
