Olympic Games Embrace Barter–Big Time! (BarterNews #4)
February 27th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsOur fourth issue looked at the use of barter in the Olympic movement, which over the years has grown in useage…
Barter’s part in the 1984 Olympic Games was this issue’s (Issue #4) cover story. Under the direction of Peter Ueberroth, the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee traded for $116 million in needed products and services to stage the Games. They subsequently posted a first-ever profit for an Olympics—$225 million!
This magazine also featured our initial face-to-face interview. We sat down with Bob Newman, a Southern Californian and a client of several trade exchanges, who was a member of the National Council of Exchangors.
The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982, legislation passed by Congress, was examined and its effect on the trade exchange industry. There was also an in-depth article on Jack Boles and his San Francisco-based trading company, modeled after the huge Japanese trading companies. We reported, as well, on how countertrade is being conducted internationally.
On the advertising front, the foremost corporate barter company at the time, Atwood Richards, purchased both inside covers…front and back. And the William B. Tanner Company took a full-page ad.
