Free Entertainment Looks Better These Days With $4 Gasoline

March 6th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No Comments

Free and low cost entertainment always does better in economically slower times. Victor Ives, who runs three barter based radio and television networks says, “The period ahead portends well for radio advertising and viewing of over-the-air television stations. Especially those with family friendly fare.”

Ives serves nearly 100 mostly smaller independent stations and cable systems. WSTV provides viewers movies without commercial interruption and is seen on outlets in the USA and Canada. Ives also targets programming to over five million homes equipped with KU Band Dishes and receivers. These families buy a small dish and receiver for under $150.00 which they own and don’t have to pay a fee to watch. The transmission from 22,500 miles in space has a footprint that covers all of Canada, USA, Mexico and part of Central America. Recently, coverage was expanded to cover much of Asia via a partnership with a teleport in Hawaii and a satellite company in the Philippines

In addition to Victor’s movie channel, direct from space viewers can pick up 80 other perfectly legitimate stations and not pay a dime subscription fee.

“As gas gallops toward $4 dollars gallon”, Ives says, “Some households are going to look at the $80 bucks a month they are paying for cable, and ask if switching to FREE satellite television doesn’t make more sense?

Another trend in economic times like these, there has always been a revival of nostalgic and family friendly entertainment.

For two and a half decades, Ives presided over the syndicated old time radio retrospective, Golden Age of Radio, for two and a half decades on over 300 stations. Ives recalled, “We launched in the era of 18 and 19% interest rates and mile long gas lines. That was one reason turning back the clock to hear radio shows of gone by years was so popular. Now, people are choosing a menu of comfort food and “comfortable” entertainment. In hard times, both economically and militarily, there is a hearkening back to family friendly and nostalgia programming. That’s why our viewers are delighting to perennial favorites, Abbott and Costello, Bob Hope, Red Skelton and other all time favorites. Recently, a 1974 made for TV film, with Bob Newhart and Gene Wilder beat out 17 other channels. Ives says, “Sponsors were amazed that we beat A&E, BRAVO, FOX News, CNN and over a dozen others. On top of that, we tied with USA (Law & Order) and MTV.” What does that tell you about today’s viewers?

White Springs Television and Talk Star Radio are NOW seen and heard, via satellite, in The Philippines and twenty Asian Nations including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. This is in addition to our coverage of all of Canada, USA, Mexico and part of Central America. Write for satellite information.
