Delta Air Lines has introduced a new program that is aimed at keeping their customers, who have accumulated a lot of frequent-flier miles, happy.The plan is definitely a step up in flexibility and offers frequent fliers a choice.

The new program, “Pay With Miles” will enable members of its SkyMiles program who have a gold or platinum SkyMiles American Express card to purchase any ticket with a combination of cash and miles.

Delta’s action is an indication of their concern about the potential for dwindling interest in their hughly profitable frequent-flier programs. (Delta reported that the number of miles held by its customers has risen 27% from 2004 to 2007.)

It will be interesting to watch what the rest of the industry does with their frequent-flier programs now that Delta has taken this bold step.
