Cicero’s Sterling Philosophy Still Valid 2000 Years Later
March 17th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsCicero was one of the most versatile minds of Roman culture. He was an impressive orator and successful lawyer and felt his political career his most important achievement. Today he is appreciated primarily for his humanism and philosophical and political writings.
I found these words (habits to avoid) from Cicero—over 2000 Years ago most applicable even now, twenty centuries later.
• The delusion that personal gain is made by crushing others.
• The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected.
• Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it.
• Refusing to set aside trivial preference.
• Neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and studying.
• Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.
These thoughts by the famous Roman orator, statesman and philosopher are still sound today…Read each point carefully and ask how many times you have found yourself making that particular error.
