Riskless Leveraging Possibilities Abound When Your Company Embraces Barter (BarterNews #16)
March 17th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsWe reported on the industry’s first regional IRTA meeting, which was held in the Northeast that year. Some 67 attendees from 27 barter companies came to Connecticut for the 2-day October session.
The cover story spotlighted eight IRTA barter companies: Barter Network of Milford (CT), Trading Exchange of Syracuse (NY), BarterOne of Ft. Myers (FL), Chicago Barter of Lombard (IL), Metro Trading Association of Madison Heights (MI), Bartermax of Boston (MA), The Exchange of Orlando (FL), and The Trade Arranger of Indianapolis (IN).
We also covered the 4-day BXI National Convention held in Tucson. It was hosted by Lee and Terry (Mr. and Mrs.) Brandfass in conjunction with Sherman Kearl, the new owner of BXI, who had recently purchased the company from founder Mac McConnell.
Bob Meyer wrote about his trading efforts prior to establishing BarterNews. At that time he was publishing three publications with an aggregate circulation of 435,000 per quarter. His article titled, “Riskless Leveraging Possibilities Abound When Your Company Embraces Barter,” was centered on Teacher’s Desk Catalog, which was mailed to 163,000 educators and schools.
He explained how he bartered for Windjammer cruises, using them as enticement so readers would complete the reader response card in the magazine to generate more leads for his advertisers. Teachers who used the cards requesting more information, entered the drawing for a free Windjammer cruise. Photos and letters from teachers, after having taken the cruise, were included.
We also asked eight experienced barterers the question, “What do you feel are the most important prerequisites for successful leverage trading?” Their answers are an education in and of themselves.
In our Countertrade Section, Leo Welt, president of Welt International, shared his expertise on “Countertrade Contract Considerations.” Additionally, C.G. Alex, Professor of Management at Georgia State University, authored “Trade And Countertrade In China.”
