(BarterNews #21) The Future Of The Barter Industry

March 28th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No Comments

Our cover story was with Matt O’Hayer, the president and CEO of Austin-based Barter Exchange Inc. (BEI). The young and tenacious 34-year-old Texan was one of the drivers of the commercial barter industry back in 1990 when we conducted the interview. BEI was ranked in 1988 as one of the top 500 privately-held companies in the nation by Inc. magazine.

O’Hayer, to his credit, was one of the most adamant people in the industry who stressed the importance of instituting solid barter accounting standards, focusing on the value of a zero-based and balanced system.

As we approached a new decade BarterNews talked with industry leaders for their take on the future. Commenting on trade exchanges, corporate barter companies, and the countertrade industries were the following individuals:

Susan Groenwald, President of IRTA; Richard Harris, President of NATE; Jerome Antil, and Matt O’Hayer of BEI; Karen Hoffman of Trade Resource International; Mike Ames of TradeAmericanCard; Perry Constantides of Barter Systems; Stephen Webster of Rochester Trade Exchange; Art Goehring of Tradecorp; Doug Dagenais of Chicago Barter Corp.; Lisa Peters of Trade Services International; Don Mardak of Continental Trade Exchange; Bruce & Richard Harris of National Commercial Exchange; Mark Tracy of American Commerce Exchange; Alan Elkin of Active Media; Richard Pippert of Broadcast Marketing Corp.; Howard Zwick of Northstar Trade Corp.; Ted Demmon of International Remarketing Corp.; Art Wagner of Active Media Services; Moreton Binn of Atwood Richards; Robert Murley of Full Circle Marketing; Jay Marshall of Commerce Exchange International; Dan West of Monsanto; Jim Tullmann of Worldwide Incentive Network; Matthew O’Neill of Apple Computer; Gary Pacific of McDonnell Douglas Helicopter; Mike Morrison of Countertrade Outlook; Jeffrey Nogee of Law Firm Brauner, Baron, et al; and Arthur Ismay of Rockwell International Trading Co.

We also had countertrade expert Frank Horwitz, who spent 10 years with GE implementing offset programs, provide us with an in-depth look at “Countertrade In The Year 2000.”

Matt Schaffer, author of the excellent book Winning The Countertrade War and also a speaker at the first Worldwide Countertrade Conference last year, put his thoughts down on paper regarding “Countertrade For Small Companies—A New Strategy For Making Money.”

Ron Szekeres, Director of Corporations at Circle Fine Art, outlined how his company barters $2,500,000 of art through trade exchanges annually in the exceptional article titled, “The Art Of Barter.”
