(BarterNews #23) Barter Industry’s Fastest-Growing Sector

April 1st, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No Comments

We sat down with the president of IRTA’s newly formed Reciprocal Trade Council, Alan Elkin, to learn how corporate trading companies have embraced self-regulation and the adoption of a Code of Ethics. The 12-page interview, which actually took place in Cancun at the IRTA Convention, provided an insightful overview of the barter industry’s fastest-growing sector.

Steve Webster, president of Rochester Trade Exchange, was the subject of our first “Do-er’s Dossier”…a close and upfront look at the “movers and shakers” in the barter industry. We also reported on Fred Detwiler, president of Michigan Trade in Oak Park, who was busy initiating business in the Soviet Union.

It was at this time that Mike Baer replaced Terry Neal as the president of ITEX Corporation, and Tom McDowell assumed the presidency of NATE for a second term. (As one of the founders of NATE he was their first president.)

Ron Szekeres returned with Part II of his fine article “The Art Of Barter,” in which he explained how Circle Fine Arts aggressively used barter to the tune of $3.5 million annually.

Scott Whitmer, founder and president of The Exchange in Orlando, as well as a licensed real estate broker, looked at the ways the services of a good trade exchange can assist real estate investors to obtain greater profits.

Victor Ives, a very creative thirty-year broadcast veteran, shared with our readers the way to use radio to increase company sales in his very entertaining piece, “Radio, The ‘Picture Perfect’ Medium.”

In our countertrade section, Miami’s world trader Charles McKay strutted his stuff. Then we journeyed to the elegant Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco to report on the PacRim Conference. The 30-day event probed the future of the Pacific Rim economics. At $2,400 a ticket it was quite an event, with representatives from more than 20 countries in attendance.

Our extensive coverage included Robert Scalapino’s presentation, “China’s Evolution And Its Impact On The Pacific Rim.” There was also an informative essay on countertrade in the U.S.S.R.
