Major Mall Owner Sees His Real Estate As “Gateway To Consumers”
April 1st, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsSimon DeBartolo, the nation’s largest mall owner, has created a new subsidiary, Simon Brand Ventures. The company intends to strike deals with a variety of companies to hawk their goods and services to mall customers like vacation time-shares, car rentals, and even will get into the business of selling hotel rooms.
DeBartolo is also considering selling “corporate sponsorships” of the malls themselves, following the lead of sport arenas—thereby naming the malls after the corporate sponsor, i.e. The Hanes Mall.
DeBartolo expects to ultimately create a multi-million-dollar business with very little capital investment— he’s merely using his empty space for the placement of kiosks. One year, for example, he collected $7 million in revenue for the automatic teller machines placed in his malls!
