(BarterNews #25) UltraTrade–The Super Computer Program
April 6th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsOur cover story, “One-On-One with Gary Pacific,” the Manager of Countertrade for McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company, offered a rare insight into how a major defense contractor seeks to profitably utilize corporate barter. It’s one of the most revealing interviews we’re published. Never before has such a major corporation willingly shared its inner-most workings regarding the corporate barter arena.
We printed the keynote address of William Steinberg, the president of Tradewell, for the IRTA convention held at the famed Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
“ITEX Revisited” looked at the nation’s largest retail trade exchange on their tenth anniversary. Founder Terry Neal and president Mike Baer shared their ideas on where the trade exchange industry is headed.
The 16-page article on the huge Ultra-Trade Program, developed by a group of mathematicians, took front and center in this issue. It was the development of a super computer program for reciprocal trade that promised to bring billions to Corporate America’s bottom line.
On the role of barter and countertrade, Senator Jim Exon of Nebraska—a long-time booster and proponent of countertrade—provided expert testimony on the subject before the U.S. Senate. He explained how our trade competitors have successfully used countertrade for years.
Additional testimony, which we covered, included comments from James Lake, assistant secretary for trade development at the International Trade Association; Dan West, director of countertrade at Monsanto; and Wayne Cooper, founder and president of Arcon Manufacturing in Charlotte (NC).
