(BarterNews #30) Food As A Currency!

April 23rd, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No Comments

We covered the 14th Annual IRTA Convention at the renowned Boca Raton Resort & Club in Florida, where 102 barter companies from around the world assembled. You won’t want to miss the keynote speech by Arthur Wagner, president of Active International, about the stunning new opportunities in media and travel.

Japan’s first trade exchange made a big 2-page splash with news and photos.

Canadian Michael Caron, a member of IRTA’s board of directors, visited Australia and inked his impressions for us in “A North American’s Impression Of The Australian Trade Exchange Industry.”

A different slant on barter and restaurants was showcased in the exceptional article titled, “Food As Currency!”

In our Corporate Barter Section we zeroed in on our cover personality, Mark McCormack, president of the International Management Group (IMG). Sports Illustrated magazine called him “the most powerful man in sports.” (McCormack represents Tiger Woods and hundreds of other famous athletes.) He’s also the author of the best-seller, What They Still Don’t Teach You At Harvard Business School.

McCormack, as you will see in reading this fascinating article, is a big believer in barter. As is another personality in this issue, powerful Hollywood producer Steven Spielberg.

We sat down with Alan Elkin, president of IRTA’s Corporate Trade Council, to look at the progress of the organization’s first four years. Especially noteworthy was Article VI, Part A, of the Code-of-Ethics that states a formal trade credit spending plan must be made a part of the contract between a barter company and the client. (We also included the Corporate Trade Council’s entire Code-of-Ethics—all 15 sections.)

Paul Suplizio’s thoughtful and suggestive 2-page “Letter to the President of the United States” was reprinted. As the Executive Director of IRTA, he provided some insightful comments.

Would you like to travel around the globe on barter? Guess what—on page 58 of this issue we show how it can be done by trading something you have, plus a little cash, for trips to virtually any destination in the world!

Our countertrade section takes a comprehensive look at offsets. Additionally, an 8-page story on how the U.S. should handle trade issues and countertrading in China, as well as how to plan an error-proof trip to China, are provided.
