(BarterNews #34) The California Barter Connection
May 20th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No Comments Our cover story took place at the charming Orfila Vineyards near San Diego. There we interviewed three very enterprising gentlemen, all located in Southern California (Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego), who had formed an unusual strategic alliance to bring more products and services to their barter clients. We revealed how Alan Zimmelman, Ilan Ben-Yosef, and Duncan Banner formed “The California Connection,” and what actions were taken to make it a successful endeavor.
The author of Barter Systems, A Business Guide For Trade Exchanges, Roger Langrick, shared his perspective on the barter industry. Some of his comments were quite surprising.
A record 257 attendees made the trek to the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas for NATE’s 11th Annual Convention. One of the highlights of the program was titled, “Meet the Players,” during which representatives from the printing and hotel industry explained how they viewed barter and utilized it to increase company profits. The attendees were talking about this special session for several days.
The Corporate Barter Section focused on Don Lyon, manager of Vendor Trade & Asset Recovery for Woolworth Corporation. He disclosed how his company trades 80% of the time…not to get rid of excess merchandise, but to reduce expenses.
“The Best and the Brightest Barter” section looked at ten different, high-powered personalities and how they used barter to build their wealth. And we published the findings of two PhD professors at Michigan State University, after they conducted an in-depth survey of the bartering activities of Fortune 500 companies.
In our Countertrade Section, an extremely valuable countertrade check-list reinforced the arduous effort needed to put together these complex international deals.
