(BarterNews #38) How To Use Barter When Buying & Selling A Business
June 3rd, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No CommentsThis issue had scores of informative articles, beginning with “How a Start-Up Microbrewery Used Barter For A Successful Launching.”
Toronto was the venue for the 1996 Annual NATE Convention which drew 272 attendees. Incoming president Mike Mercier urged the group to “Harness The Fire,” carrying forward Jack Schacht’s prior suggestion to “Catch The Fire!” It was at this convention that Perry Constantinides shared information on his internet site—one of the first in the industry.
The “Great NATE Debate” took place and focused on the often discussed question, “Is it best to be an independent trade exchange or part of a national affiliation?” It was quite a unique analysis.
The keynote speaker at the convention was Peter Comrie, an articulate and convincing entrepreneur, who told the barter company owners assembled, “You’ve come to this convention with responsibilities that are greater than you imagined.” Comrie passionately urged the industry to spread the word…inform the marketplace including visits to local schools, business colleges, and universities. “Educate them about barter, so they understand that the idea of trading is the most honorable issue on the continent.”
In the popular section “Direct From The Street,” we interviewed George Wein, the world’s largest supplier of investment advisory services. His company, Select Information Exchange, takes full page ads in The Wall Street Journal. He’s used barter directly for decades, and trades through barter companies as well. His comments were especially informative.
Attorney Donald Hunsberger shared his expertise in the article “How To Use Barter For Greater Profits When Buying And Selling Your Business.”
In our Corporate Barter Section, we saw how the greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau put together a $425,000 media barter buy to promote more business during the slower summer months.
“The Best and the Brightest Barter” section had 24 fascinating short stories on barter’s growing usage as companies’ awareness of “private capital” expands. Neil Rutter, in our Countertrade Section, completed his excellent article, “Managing Risks In Countertrade Transactions, Part II.”
