(BarterNews #39) Bartercard’s Ambitious Worldwide Expansion Plans

June 4th, 2008 · by Bob Meyer · No Comments

Our cover story focused on one of the industry’s rising stars, Wayne Sharpe, founder and CEO of Bartercard, which began operations six years prior in Australia. This interview in 1996 was titled, “An In-depth Look At Bartercard’s Ambitious Worldwide Expansion Plans,” which was very apropos. Sharpe is one of the industry’s most focused and determined individuals, as you’ll see when reading this remarkable success story.

Within ten years, Bartercard would become the world’s largest barter company. See how it all began…you’ll learn the impetus of the driving force behind the company, and the internal structure used to build a global barter empire.

One hundred sixty-five attendees made a trip north for IRTA’s 17th Annual Convention, held at the Mont Gabriel Resort, a one-hour drive from Montreal. Most noteworthy was the members’ unanimous adoption of a proposed Universal Currency (UC), wherein IRTA “would oversee and operate a currency enabling inter-exchange trading.” The objective was for barter companies to look to each other as cooperative partners in servicing their members, so as to provide more products and services to their client base.

Art Wagner, president and co-founder of Active International, made the keynote speech at the convention. He alluded to the UC as a revolutionary way to expand bartering efforts worldwide; we have his insights in this issue.

The final installment (in a series of three articles) by attorney Don Hunsberger, “Barter And The Sale Of A Business” was wrapped up. And our Do-er’s Dossier looked at Michael Caron, president of Barterplus Systems in Toronto.

In our Corporate Barter Section, Lance Lundberg, creative founder of Icon International, explained his reasoning for a joint venture with Bartercard.

“The Best and the Brightest Barter” section had another fifteen mini-stories showing how some of the most successful and astute business people embrace barter to build their empires.

We traveled to Salt Lake City for the American Countertrade Association’s 10th annual convention. Bob Meyer’s address to the ACA, titled “The Role Of The Press Within The Context Of The Countertrade Business,” was reprinted in full.
